The sold-out crowd at EDION Arena Osaka witnessed a historic moment in professional wrestling as Hirooki Goto defeated Zack Sabre Jr. to become the new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. This victory marks a significant milestone in Goto's career, as he finally claimed the top prize in New Japan Pro Wrestling after numerous attempts.

Goto earned his shot at the title by winning the annual New Japan Ranbo during the pre-show of Wrestle Kingdom 19. Rather than waiting for a later date, Goto decided to cash in his opportunity immediately, facing Sabre Jr. in the main event of NJPW's "The New Beginning in Osaka" event.

The match was intense and hard-fought, with Sabre Jr. dominating much of the action. However, Goto's resilience and determination shone through as he managed to connect with back-to-back GTRs (Goto Roll) to secure the victory. The crowd erupted in cheers as Goto pinned Sabre Jr., finally achieving his long-awaited dream.

With this win, Goto joins an elite group of NJPW stars who have won a version of their Triple Crown, having previously held the IWGP Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight Championships. He is the first man to win the new version of the Triple Crown since the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship started a new lineage in 2021.

Goto dedicated his victory to his late father, who passed away earlier in 2024, and celebrated in the ring with his children, who were visibly emotional. The new champion's first title defense is scheduled for NJPW's 53rd Anniversary Event on March 6, where he will face off against Hiroshi Tanahashi.

Goto's journey to the top has been filled with ups and downs, but his perseverance and unwavering spirit have finally paid off. As he embarks on his reign as IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, fans eagerly await what's next for this beloved wrestler.
