Massive Layoffs at Studio Behind WWE 2K Series
The gaming industry has been hit by another wave of significant job cuts as 2K and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, conducted a round of layoffs on May 14, 2026. While the reductions were described as company-wide, the impact has been felt most acutely at Visual Concepts, the studio responsible for the annual NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises.
The core of the issue appears to stem from the underperformance of WWE 2K25: Netflix Edition. Despite high download numbers and generally positive reviews, the mobile-exclusive title reportedly failed to meet the specific financial expectations set by Netflix. The fallout from this performance led Netflix to opt out of renewing its contract for future mobile editions in 2026 and 2027. This cancellation left a substantial portion of the development team without an active project, leading to what sources describe as an insignificant but deeply impactful number of redundancies.
Reports from within the studio suggest a disconnect between leadership and the development staff. Internal sources alleged that management continued to paint a positive picture of the Netflix partnership even as the situation deteriorated. The layoffs have also raised concerns regarding the workload for the remaining staff, particularly as the WWE 2K team has traditionally operated with a smaller headcount than its NBA counterparts while maintaining a rigorous annual release schedule.
The timing of the announcement added to the frustration within the studio. The layoffs were confirmed just as Take-Two Interactive saw its stock value increase by billions of dollars following renewed speculation and leaks regarding Grand Theft Auto 6. For many at Visual Concepts, the contrast between corporate financial growth and the loss of veteran developers—some of whom were reportedly let go while on sick leave or recently diagnosed with chronic illnesses—has marked a dark chapter for the long-standing developer.
As of May 15, neither 2K nor Take-Two has provided an official statement regarding the exact scale of the cuts. However, the loss of specialized talent within the WWE 2K department has sparked concerns among fans about the long-term stability and quality of the wrestling franchise. With the Netflix mobile deal now dead and a reduced team handling the transition into the next development cycle, the pressure on Visual Concepts to maintain its recent momentum has never been higher.
